Rodas is a 72-year-old widower who lives in a senior citizen gated community. He lost his spouse to cardiac arrest two years ago, and recently he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that spread to his bones and lungs. He’s a disciplined man who would wake up early to go for a brisk morning stroll but has now stopped the same activity. While he is usually cheerful and pleasant to all, he seems more optimistic and says that this is a ‘blessing.’ He brushes off other health concerns and appears not to be bothered by his condition, saying that ‘his time has come.’ He was secretly donating much of his belongings and getting his ‘affairs in order.’ He also ignored the advice of his doctor and actively smoked his pipe. When you talk to him, you know he’s lonely and tired. He does not want to be a burden to anyone. He wants to take matters into his own hands’ and has been stockpiling on medications that he can overdose ‘when the moment is right.’
